Plot / Synopsis

Twenty years ago, a few years before I was born, mom loved a guy. Twenty years ago, they were forced apart and when the silly fool left, he took my mom’s smile with him. I’ve gotta find him, gotta bring him back for mom. Otherwise, I’ll die. – Lulu, 15 years old.

A young 15 year old girl seeks to find out why her mother is so sullen and eventually discovers via an old photo and ciné film that since a failed love of her youth, she has never been the same. The young lady manages to find the mother's ex boyfriend, who is a vet in a zoo, and subtly arranges for the two to meet. Of course the ex boyfriend has aged somewhat and lost the central part of his hair, nevertheless she recognizes him though he does not recognize her. Parallel to this, they mother discovers that she is seriously ill.

Plot / Synopsis

A man leading a double life finds his obsessions leading him in a dark, troubling direction in this drama from South African filmmaker Oliver Hermanus. Francois is a South African businessman in his mid-forties who on the surface seems to be an ordinary, happily married, and respectable citizen. Plot / Synopsis

This film is based on real documents and facts that are no longer secret. The greater part of the CIA’s intrigues and crimes have still to be revealed.

So reads the opening statement of C.I.A. SECRET STORY, a bizarre and shockingly violent pseudo-documentary that could only have come out of Italy. Presented in a documentary-like form, this odd, mondo-style film sets out to reveal all the shady business and wrongdoings committed by the CIA. Reenacted for the camera are the CIA’s supposed involvement in a series of true events such as the American bombing of Guatemala at the insistence of the powerful United Fruit Company, the Bay of Pigs invasion, and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

The film remains best known for a very graphic, unpleasent mid section, lasting about five minutes, in which we are treated to a catalogue of CIA advocated torture techniques - people having their hands crushed, nipples burnt, being forcibly raped, having red hot needles stuck in their genitals etc etc etc. This is utterly gratuitous (although the filmmakers would unquestionnably argue that it was putting across a point), and comes across like something out of one of the nazi prison camp films that were popular at the time.

Plot / Synopsis

A man is found one morning in the bushes of a city plaza in Prague. He is taken to a hospital where the doctors confirm that, although his eyes are wide open, he is dead. There is no heartbeat or sign of life, except, strangely enough, his body temperature is normal. No matter, he's certified as dead and sent into cold storage to wait for an autopsy. "I'm alive," the man thinks, "can't you see I'm alive?" The man, Gregory (Jean Sorel), isn't dead but he's paralyzed and helpless to alert his condition to anyone. As the doctors prepare for the autopsy, Gregory thinks back to yesterday, when he was making plans to help his girlfriend (Barbara Bach) get out of the country. Gregory begins piecing together the mystery of what happened to him in fractured bits of memory -- but will solving the puzzle do him any good?

Otto sits motionless (paraplegic) in a chair. Left paralyzed, he is only able to move his eyes while speech, motion and eating is completely severed from his existence. His wife Magda is left to take care of him in his catatonic state but hates everything about what her life has become. Out of total inconsideration she brings back men every night to the house to have sex with them in the next room while her husband can only gaze in spite.

Otto requires 24 hour care, which includes a daily wash and diaper change. Magda however, has gotten to a point of self destruction trapped within her own personal hell that only drives things into the worst.
Otto’ s daughter remains caring, concerned, doing what she can to visit and read to her motionless father. Otto can only react with his eyes of which even without body use manages to communicate on “some” level.
Things take a turn for the worst when a group of guys from the local tavern follow Magda home assaulting the entire family. The mother, and daughter are beaten and raped in front to Otto who is forced to observe unable to aid in any way whatsoever. The 2 are left for dead while paralyzed Otto is left to suffer.

Plot / Synopsis

Following a car accident, in which he believes he killed a boy, Arthur Seligman (José Garcia) falls for several hours into a coma. While in the coma, he pronounces incoherent sentences. At his awakening, he does not remember what happened before the crash, and he does not know the meaning of the words he pronounced while unconscious. The nurse who assisted him, Isabelle Kruger (Marion Cotillard), recorded those to a tape, which she gives him. Arthur then tries to understand what happened, what those sentences mean, and begins to lose his grasp of reality.

Plot / Synopsis
François Leterrier, who went on to become a filmmaker himself but who performed in only one other film (Alain Resnais’s Stavisky), plays the prisoner-of-war Fontaine in "A Man Escaped." Especially evident in this film is the special attention Bresson’s camera gives to objects, but more importantly, to one individual’s patient interaction with the handful of objects at his disposal as he painstakingly plans his escape from prison. Fontaine, who is based on a real person, André Devigny, whose memoir inspired the film, might be the most impressive and inspiring of Bresson’s heroes. Bresson himself spent a year in a military prison during World War Two, and the first-hand knowledge he gained therein of the brutal living conditions of such a prison contributed greatly to the realism of "A Man Escaped."

Especially noteworthy in this film is the virtuoso editing by Raymond Lamy, working with Bresson for the first time, who would go on to help make "Pickpocket," "Au Hasard Balthasar," and "Mouchette" the great films that they are. (He also edited "Une femme douce," but having not seen it yet, I cannot comment on his contributions to that film.) Lamy’s editing of the complicated series of shots constituting the escape sequence is so admired that it’s taught in film schools.

Criterion
A new priest (Claude Laydu) arrives in the French country village of Ambricourt to attend to his first parish. The apathetic and hostile rural congregation rejects him immediately. Through his diary entries, the suffering young man relays a crisis of faith that threatens to drive him away from the village and from God. With his fourth film, Robert Bresson began to implement his stylistic philosophy as a filmmaker, stripping away all inessential elements from his compositions, the dialogue and the music, exacting a purity of image and sound.

With "Diary of a Country Priest" Bresson made the bold decision to work from then on almost exclusively with non-actors, whom he called "models," which, of course, meant never working with the same model twice. The effectiveness of this decision for bringing a naturalism both complex in its realism and simple in its directness is made immediately apparent by the quiet intensity of Claude Laydu’s emotional, yet restrained performance as the eponymous priest.

Of course, Bresson had such a knack for discovering raw talent that most of his "models" went on to become "actors," and Laydu, who passed away in 2011, with twenty credits to his name, was no exception. Laydu’s priest is surely Bresson’s most endearing hero, never more so than when he smiles sweetly in one of the rare moments when a member of the townsfolk treats him with genuine kindness.

This unique love story, based on a novelette by Denis Diderot and with dialogue written by Jean Cocteau, follows the maneuverings of a society lady as she connives to initiate a scandalous affair between her aristocratic ex-lover and a prostitute. The Spanish-born actress María Casares (who in 1945 also starred in Marcel Carné’s Children of Paradise) wears such a witch-like gaze as the rich benefactress Hélène in "Les dames du Bois de Boulogne" that we know that something sinister is afoot when she installs the dancer/prostitute Agnès and her mother in a small apartment and provides for their needs. Under the pretext of rehabilitating Agnès’s reputation, Hélène essentially imprisons the two women. Agnès is too famous for her dancing (and other talents) to go out in public without being recognized. Meanwhile, Hélène slyly sees to it that the ex-lover who scorned her, Jean (Paul Bernard)–who is completely unaware of Agnès’s checkered past, believing her instead to be the picture of innocence–falls madly in love with the young ex-dancer/ex-prostitute, his infatuation only exacerbated by her inaccessibility.
